Artificial Intelligence : "Real World" Systems : Projects and Research

This section of AI applications looks at current projects and research. We want to try and give a flavour about some of the research which is currently being undertaken in the area of AI. This research can lead to tomorrows applications and hardware. If you know of any current AI related research or project which may be of interest to us please contact us for inclusion.

Research into the practical aspects of implementing AI systems - Stratum Management Ltd

The first example is really research into research. Looking at to see if AI based projects have less chance of making it through to proper systems than those based on conventional IT systems. It is trying to bring together people who have had experience in implementing AI systems and seeing what problems they have had to overcome.

The research is being coordinated by Richard Ellis of Stratum Management Ltd, a friend of AKRI. See more on how to become involved in the research.

Autonomous Helicopter Project - Carnegie Mellon University

This projects mission is to develop a vision-guided robot helicopter which can autonomously carry out several goals on a mission in any weather conditions and using only on-board intelligence and computing power. The mission is quite complex and could be applied to areas like search and rescue.

The AI research Lab at MIT

The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has been an active entity at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in one form or another since at least 1959. Their goal is to understand the nature of intelligence and to engineer systems that exhibit intelligence. At any one time they have numerous research projects going on in 13 areas associated with AI.

Current research projects at MIT.

AI research at the Jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at NASA

The Artificial Intelligence Group at JPL performs basic research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence Planning and Scheduling, with applications to science analysis, spacecraft commanding, deep space network operations, and space transportation systems.

The Central Lab for Agricultural Expert Systems

In 1987, officials at the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and land reclamation, recognized expert systems as an appropriate technology for speeding development in the agricultural sector. From that point they have pioneered using expert systems in agriculture. This website have been built to show what is available and current research into this area There is good information on all aspects of the research and detailed information of expert systems that have been built by the lab.

The Advanced Computation Laboratory - Cancer Research UK

The Laboratory conducts research in the computer and cognitive sciences, including artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive psychology, as a basis for developing innovative information technologies to support patient care. Current projects include LISA, a decision support tool for helping childrens chances with surviving a form of Leukaemia, and REACT, a patented technology for assisting in the creation and enactment of complex care plans.

Intelligence, Agents, Multi-media group - University of Southampton

The group claims to be one of the largest of its kind that are world leaders in the key technologies of agent-based computing and knowledge management. Look at the list of current research projects (around 50) and many of the topics are around agent based computing and Knowledge aquisition and representation.

The Artificial Intelligence center - SRI International

The AI center has been set up by SRI international (formally The Stanford Research Institute - one of the founding fathers of research into AI). Find out about the history of AKRI, research and achievements.
