Starting his career in General Engineering, Martin moved on to Computer Aided Engineering in both the design (CAD) and Manufacturing (CAM) areas. This involved the design and production of prototypes for local industry including the machining of an early computer mouse for a local graphics multimedia design and manufacturing company. Martin also taught CNC parts programming and robotics for National Certificate engineering courses.
Following this, Martin became involved with North West Artificial Intelligence Applications Group performing knowledge elicitation for the Energy Management Advisor software development project which subsequently became the most requested Energy Technology Support Unit energy efficiency publication by business. Martin has also developed multimedia applications on Health and Safety in the Workplace for European funded projects.
Martin now works on the Structural Knowledge Analysis of organisational knowledge resources with John Gordon. He also has co-authored papers published by AKRI and external organisations, the most recent being “Understanding the Human Knowledge Resource using Knowledge Structure Mapping” in Asia Pacific Tech Monitor.
Martin has also presented at AKRI business events for local industry on the topics of The Knowledge Resource and Business use of Intelligent Systems.
In 2004 Martin took over the AKRI’s administrative duties in addition to his existing responsibilities part of which invloves helping to organise the British Computing Society’s Machine Intelligence Prize which takes place at the SGAI conference in Cambridge each December.

Martin is very active in the sports area playing Squash, Tennis, Soccer as well as being an enthusiastic wakeboader during the summer months.
He also works out at his local Gym in his spare time.
Other interests include going to see live music, Supporting Blackburn Rovers FC and Wigan RLFC and going out for a pint.
